Garage Storage on “The Block”

garage storage on the block

2021 saw Channel 9’s “The Block’ feature a Garage Storage system from a local Melbourne supplier. It may not have been StoreWALL (more on this later) but Garage Storage on “The Block” gave many viewers some new ideas on how they could reorganise their garage area.

You can find details of the actual suppliers used by Ronnie and Georgia here. I don’t recall the budget they allocated to their Garage Solution but looking at the size of the wall and the range of accessories included, they would have pushed close to the $6 – $8k mark.

The end result for the garage looks great. It combines wall panels with shelving across the top and then a range of tall and short cupboards at the far end. It also features a small bench area upon which someone can work.

StoreWALL on The Block

Around 3 years ago, we were contacted by a couple of Contestants from The Block. Well, that is how they introduced themselves at the time. They were looking for Brite White Wall Panels for their garage and unfortunately at the time we were very low in stock and couldn’t help them. So we missed our opportunity in the limelight.

However, the use of wall panels on the 2021 season show was a great inclusion and as I mentioned earlier a great result for the eventual owners of the home that was renovated.

Wall panels not only look great in the garage, but they also deliver lots of flexibility for the homeowner. For a double garage that endeavours to fit two vehicles, using the wall for storage is the right approach. Your stored items stay flat against the wall and can be stored high or even low. This provides you with more room to safely open your garage doors.

I don’t watch “The Block” religiously, but upon visiting a client today to measure their wall and provide a quote, they reminded me about the show and that they had also contacted the supplier.

The customer who is also in Melbourne had recently moved into a new home and had no storage at all in their garage. They had lots of “kid gear” to store plus lots of gardening equipment. The garage had 2 great walls for wall storage and a possible third. Whilst it was 2.5m in height and 6.4m in length, I recommended applying panels to the middle section with 350mm left at the top and bottom of the wall. Along the length, they were looking at about 4.8m of panels. So the total square meters of the main wall would be 8.64sqm.

I will keep you posted if we end up completing the wall for the client with some pictures.

Space Invaders – Decluttering Show

space invaders - decluttering show

Channel Nine have launched a new show called Space Invaders and it is all about one of our favourite topics “Decluttering”.

Decluttering and getting the home organised is something we all have grand ideas of doing, but what happens when your house is utter chaos and you don’t know where to start?

Channel Nine website

The show features the declutter guru Peter Walsh, renovation queen Cherie Barber and treasure hunter Lucas Callaghan.

Space Invaders Show

I watched the first episode this weekend. They helped an older couple who had a serious “hoarding issue”. It wasn’t that they were hoarding one specific thing like newspapers. They were just never throwing old things out that they had collected over the years.

With so much stuff being kept in spare bedrooms they didn’t have room to safely allow their grand-daughter to sleep over.

Not letting go of our old non used belongings is a very common problem. It more of less happens to us all. Some times it can become a serious and even safety issue.

The show isn’t about throwing everything out though. They worked through the couple’s belonging to find “treasures” that can be brought to life and used again once they have cleaned up the home or room.

Having a 3rd party help you declutter rooms in your home can be good idea. It can help speed the process up. It can also help cut through some of the emotional reasons why we hold onto older belongings.

In one scene, the “space invaders” created a box for what it seemed each of the couple’s children. They boxes were put into storage (Storage King) with several months paid for by the show. They also told them that if their children don’t come and sort through their box in that time, they could either decide to pay for the storage or throw it all away to save themselves some money.

Decluttering is our key focus. Whilst we aren’t about helping you clean up bedrooms we are about helping your sort through your garage and storage areas.

Space Invaders airs on Saturday February 27 at 7.30pm on Nine.

StoreWALL on Marie Kondo’s Show

StoreWALL on Marie Kondo's Show

Marie Kondo’s hit Netflix series, Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, has become a super hit on Netflix as well as making her a household name. It would be great to have StoreWALL on Marie Kondo’s show, and maybe our colleagues in the US can work on this.

Families across Australia have been watching her program and taking her tips into their home to desperately try and tidy up. I must admit I haven’t watched her program (my wife and kids have) but shows just like this are inspiring people to tidy up inside as well as outside.

KonMari Technique

Marie Kondo preaches the KonMari Technique. The practise of divide up your home into categories and sorting through it all, identifying junk and items of value. Decluttering blogs have been around for over a decade. Just search decluttering and you will find hundreds of experts, literally hundreds of them all with a special recipe to help you get your home into shape. Many will also come out to your home for a fee and help you do it. Although I’m not sure this is as popular in Australia as it is in the US.

Marie Kondo is super popular and easily recognisable with her white tops, white cardigans and perfectly combed straight hair. You can read all about it here. Marie also has several books on the topic and of course you can also watch the Netflix series.

Reality Check

Reading through some articles from avid viewers who have tried the technique, not everyone is totally in love with Marie’s ideas. However I must say that cleaning up any area in your home, categorising your belongings and removing the unwanted from your home (not just the room) is not a small process and very time consuming. Most go 75% of the way and stop and that’s what many of these articles say.

StoreWALL on Marie Kondo’s Show

If we did manage to get StoreWALL on Marie Kondo’s Show this is what I would like it to focus on.

Firstly rather than look inside the house, a garage, shed or storeroom would be ideal. It also doesn’t need to be too messy either. The biggest issue for most people and their garage is its just full with not enough room to fit any more. There are items on the walls, items on shelfs and lots of stuff on the ground.

Where StoreWALL can help is once the culling is complete (this is where the KonMari technique can do its thing) StoreWALL slides in with a great way to keep it all organised and off the floor.
