Heavy Duty Garage Shelving

shelves for a small garage

Garage storage is a super popular topic these days and no wonder, our garages are full and most people are looking at how they can maximise the space they have. One of the really popular accessories within the StoreWALL range is the Heavy Duty Garage Shelving.

The range is not your typical standalone garage shelving found at Bunnings or other Shelving stores. StoreWALL’s shelving can be created from our range of addon brackets or through our great range of heavy metal shelves. These shelves are a clip and lock accessory connected to your StoreWALL slatwall garage panels.

Our Heavy Duty Garage Shelving has proven rather popular since we launched StoreWALL in Australia. In addition to heavy duty metal shelving, we now also stock an expanded range of wire shelving as well as our new new light weight metal shelving.

Heavy Duty Garage Shelving

The StoreWALL’s range of heavy duty garage shelving options can be custom built using our slatwall garage storage system. Once your panels are installed, creating shelving is a simple process. We offer a great range of brackets and metal shelves which just clip and lock into your wall using our exclusive CamLok.

Brackets

By using our heavy duty brackets which come in a 254mm or 380mm depth, you can build your own shelves anywhere you need to on your wall. Our brackets are made from solid steel and come with CamLok to secure your storage.

Once the brackets are clipped onto your wall panels, just add a StoreWALL plastic or metal shelf or build your own from wood, chipboard or any other surface you prefer.

There is no limit to how long you can make your shelves. Extend the length of your shelves by adding an additional bracket or two. With your StoreWALL panels, you can even run it along the whole length of your wall.

Metal Shelves

StoreWALL offers several heavy duty shelving options which are pre-built and can be easily added to your slatwall.

Our Heavy Metal Shelves come in two widths, the 762mm and a 1219mm. The dimensions are as follows:

762mm Metal Shelf

  • 762mm long x 393mm deep x 254mm high
  • weight it can hold is 90kgs
  • material is solid steel, powder coated
  • the actual shelving space that can be used (top area) is 380mm x 760mm

1219mm Metal Shelf

  • 1219mm long x 393mm deep x 254mm high
  • weight it can hold is 90kgs
  • material is solid steel, powder coated
  • the actual shelving space that can be used (top area) is 393mm x 1219mm

Shelf Flexibility

Some of the key advantages of the StoreWALL range is its portability. Each StoreWALL shelf and any accessory for that matter can be added to your wall and moved around as and when required. If you need to move the shelf half a meter to the left or right, you can unlock it and slide it along. Should you need to move it from one end of the wall to the other you can remove it altogether and completely change its location or size. Using our slatwall panels, our heavy duty garage shelving can also be moved up and down your wall.

Heavy Duty Wire Shelving
StoreWALL Metal Wire Shelves

The difference with standalone shelving is that its usually one large piece of furniture 1m+ in width and 1m+ in height. Heavy duty garage storage racks are very useful in a garage and can be used in conjunction with the StoreWALL range. The challenge with it however is that moving it around can be difficult. Firstly you need to find the space to move it to. Secondly everything that is stored on it also needs to be removed and then added back on. This isn’t a small exercise.

Lightweight Slatwall Shelving

Smaller shelving such as our Heavy Duty Garage Shelving will easily compliment anything else you are setting up within your garage. With the option of a 762mm or 1219mm shelf you are well covered for all your garage needs.

It doesn’t end there. StoreWALL also offers a much bigger range of smaller lighter weight shelves which are just as easily added and removed from your slatwall panels.

We also have a full range of wire shelves which come in a range of lengths and depths to suit your needs. These shelves also come with our exclusive CamLok locking mechanism which secures all your accessories to your garage wall panels.

Tool Shelf Ideas

power tool shelves1

My father spent his life as a handy man. Whether it was doing work at home, for friends or the occasional customer he built up a large collection of tools to help him get the job done. What I also noticed he did over the years was create lots and lots of effective and sometimes curious tool shelf ideas. He would chop and change them all of the time as he tested them out or over-used and wore them out.

Storing My Tools

I have inherited some of my father’s handyman traits as well as the challenge of how to effectively store my tools. The biggest challenge I find with organising tools in my garage is that when you start a project you need all of your tools handy and accessible. This means you want them out. Once out, you use them until the job is done but they remain out during this time making it easy to misplace them. Being out they are also prone to being stepped on or kicked as well as touched by others in the family.

Having done some research there is no shortage of tool shelf ideas that will help you to protect your tools. Some can be purchased from your local hardware store but also easily made to your own requirements. I have added plenty of pictures below of great ideas. You can combine shelving, tool racks, drawers, as well as magnetic tool bars.

Your garage might not be on top of your list of spaces that need immediate attention, but when you consider the value of your tools you might want to re-prioritise.

Tool Shelf Ideas

About 2 years ago I built myself a backboard with accompanying shelf from some scrap chipboard I had collected. This allowed me to hang some of my tools and then keep others on display. The problem with the display is that the shelf ended up quite shallow. Its probably 150mm in depth which holds two spray cans worth. It works but isn’t great.

Tool Shelf Ideas – Metal Shelf 1.2m long

When I came across StoreWALL I was impressed by the range of brackets and shelfs they make available. The standard metal shelf is 762mm long and 393mm deep. They also offer a longer shelf at 1.2m in width (same depth). Using the CamLok system once added to your wall they are locked in and will stay in place. However they can also be moved around once you need to change your layout.

Having more shelves with a greater depth can assist you to keep more of your tools at arm’s reach rather than having to always carry them around with you around the house as you work.

StoreWALL also offer the ability to build your own shelves. By combining the range of StoreWALL brackets you can add your own shelf top made of timber or any other material you prefer. You can also adjust the depth to your own requirements.

Wooden Shelves

When it comes to power tools, some manufacturers like Milwaukee provide you with an easy to use case to store your power drills. These cases are self contained and are easy to store. There are other however like Ryobi who provide a material case or bag to store the equipment in. These containers are less practical. Others at the cheaper end just provide the box.

Below are some tools shelf ideas for power tools that allow you to safely hang the tool and store the batteries and the charges in full view. If you look at the design it’s not complicated at all and can be easily built over a weekend.

Then there are designs that will hold much more than your power drills. You can add sanders and power saws plus much more.

Garage Tool Storage Ideas for Home

garage tool storage ideas

Having lived in my current home for almost 20 years, I like most people have accumulated a wealth of stuff. Amongst this are my prized tools. As the collection has grown so has my endeavour to find new garage tool storage ideas.

Garage tools come in all shapes and sizes. Some are small enough to easily fit into a drawer eg your spanners and screw drivers. But even these can be a struggle as their size grows. They can also be very heavy, so having them all in one drawer is not always the smartest idea.

About 12 months ago, I decided to build my own wall storage space. The wall panel is about 1m x 1m and has a 18cm shelf at the bottom. I added about 6 hooks across the top so that I could hand the longer tools. The shelf has been used to store cans of spray, glue, putty and basically anything that would fit.

It turned out OK in the end but when I discovered the StoreWALL range, I knew my panels were a bit amateur. StoreWALL has better garage tool storage ideas that are not only durable but do more with the space. My wall panel has very little depth outside of the shelf. Tools are also hung vertically using the hooks. The problem with this is that the middle area space is kind of wasted.

StoreWALL has a great range of hooks which come in varied depths. They can hang your garage tools both vertically and horizontally. For $400, I could have ended up with a much stronger and more versatile solution. It’s not only hooks however, StoreWALL has shelves and brackets can be really useful and easy to move around. They come in a range of sizes and depths to assist any garage.

Compare the StoreWALL hook range and see for yourself how it can help with your garage tool storage ideas.

Doing More With Garage Shelving

Best use of shelves

Whether it’s elaborate, sleek, wood, plastic, deep or shallow, when you’re organizing your spaces, nothing is quite as simple and functional as well-placed garage shelving. Shelves are an easy way to make use of your wall space getting them off your floors, tables and counters. And unlike cabinets tthey don’t require you to open doors.

Here are a few tips and tricks for more effective shelf use:

Being shallow can be a good thing.

Using shelves that are way too big for the items you need to store is a giant waste of space, and an effective organization killer. Keep shelves the proper size – use garage shelves that are as deep as the items you want to put on them.

If you need to reach behind an item to get to something else, you risk knocking or pulling things off the shelf you didn’t want to. If items fall off your cluttered shelf they can break, or even worse, they can cause injury.

StoreWALL Shelve Depths

StoreWALL offers a great range of shelf depths:

  • 127mm shelf – Used for small items such as spices, picture frames or bottles of household cleaners. They come in different lengths to fit all your spaces and mount easily into storeWALL wall panels. StoreWALL panels make adjusting and moving shelves really easy
  • 254mm shelf – Perfect for bigger items such as boxes and books of all sizes
  • 381mm shelf – Ideal for large items such as kitchen appliances, softdrink cases or laundry baskets.

Don’t let them buckle under pressure.

The internet is a great tool for spreading new, creative ideas. While many of these ideas look great, you have to sometimes wonder how much the shelves can actually hold before they rip out of your wall and dump everything sitting on them onto the ground.

Make sure any shelf you hang is rated to safely hold the amount of weight you want to set on it. StoreWALL shelves are made from lightweight thermoplastic that’s also incredibly strong. Using InstallStrips with your wall panels ensures they can safely hold the recommended weight.

Having recently updated my garage and reviewed a range of shelving and garage storage solutions, I found that a garage needs both shelves and wall panels. I found I needed shelves to store the large items like suitcases, rugs, tables and chairs but also hooks, brackets and baskets to keep the things I need to access regularly. The biggest challenge I found with the shelving I purchased was that whilst it stored everything really well, getting things out of it to use was not so easy.

Start with two groups covering things that you might need once or maybe twice a year and the other items that you will need more regularly. You can then further split this regular group into gardening, sports, summer and others.
